Anecdotal information suggests that cats can cry in times of sadness or rage. Cats do occasionally have wet eyes, it’s true. In addition, grief is something that cats do experience. If you’ve ever seen a cat with teary eyes at the same time they’re grieving, it’s most likely just a coincidence.
Real Cat Feelings Exist
According to studies, cats do really have emotions. They have a range of emotions for both people and other animals and are able to read human facial expressions. When they feel something, they can act on it. For illustration:
- A satisfied cat may connect with people and other animals by purring, rubbing, playing, or in other ways.
- A sad cat could withdraw, stop eating, or become drowsy.
- Growling, hissing, arching its back, or swatting at a person or another animal are all signs of an angry or terrified cat.
Cats have been known to make sounds imitating human whimpers or wails when anxious, irate, or upset. The noises are emotional cues, so in that sense the cat is crying. However, according to studies, humans are the only animals that can cry in response to strong emotions or suffering.
The True Cause of Cat Tears
Cats’ eyes may “cry” or wet for a variety of medical reasons that are not emotional. For instance, a cat scratch or a dust particle irritating the eyes could be the cause. Tears can also be caused by infectious illnesses, such as upper respiratory infections. Amazingly, blocked tear ducts can also make people tear up.
In addition, the following could account for a cat’s teary eyes:
- Conjunctivitis (pink eye)
- Infections
- Allergies and structural issues (cats with rounded heads are more likely to tear up)
It’s important to realize that if you see your cat crying, they are not acting very upset. Instead, they are showing you that a medical issue exists. The issue is frequently not big. Cat tears, however, can occasionally indicate a significant problem or one that, if left unchecked, could prove tragic.
If tearing occurs regularly, it is wise to see your veterinarian. While always appreciated, your cat won’t be able to stop sobbing even with your sympathy and petting.
If Your Cat Is Suicidal
Cats never cry to convey their emotions, even though they surely experience sadness or loss. Lethargy, withdrawal, or loss of appetite are a few additional signs to watch for if you are concerned about your pet’s emotional health. These issues might be a sign of a medical condition.
