Semi Moist Cat Food
Semi Moist Cat Food
Right in between dry cat food and moist canned cat food sits, the semi moist food. The semi moist cat food is not completely soft, but is not crunchy either. It has a water content of approximately 35%, giving it a soft structure. Although it is not hard dry food, semi moist should not be viewed as a substitute for water. Cats need lots of hydration so be sure to always have a clean fresh bowl of water available for your pet.
The semi dry cat food is sold in sealed packages and looks much like dry food pieces. It is not as widely available as dry or canned food, however like dry food, it can remain in your cat’s dish for free-choice feeding. Eventually the food will dry up, so you need to be aware of how often you are refreshing your cat’s food. If the semi soft becomes hard, it will lose it’s aroma and your cat will not be interested in it anymore.
Semi moist cat food falls between dry food and canned cat food when it comes to price.
How is Semi Moist Cat Food Made?
Semi-moist foods are made using the same process as that as dry which is a mixing of water, raw materials and dry ingredients. Once mixed together, the content is extruded (much like cookie dough in a cookie press or pasta through a pasta press). At this point, semi moist is now cooled (rather than being dried like dry food) This cooling process creates a skin over the pieces, the pieces are then coated with fat which provides taste and protein. After coating, the pieces head for the packaging!
