Taurine
What is Taurine? taurine 1 |ˈtôˌrēn|
noun Biochemistry
a sulfur-containing amino acid important in the metabolism of fats. • Chem. formula: NH 2 CH 2 CH 2 SO 3 H.
Taurine is an actual amino acid that kitties need in their everyday diets. Most cat food contains the Taurine cat’s need to stay healthy and this is why it is very important not to feed your cat people food only. Trying to live on a diet like yours can be very dangerous to your cat. Even feeding your cat dog food is very dangerous as cats cannot synthesize Taurine from other building blocks the way that dogs and humans can.
Prolonged Taurine deficiency can result in:
- retinal degeneration (which can lead to blindness)
- dilated cardiomyopathy (leading to heart failure)
How much Taurine does my cat need?
Most Scientists widely agreed upon that cats should consume 1000mg (1 gm) or taurine per 2.2 lbs of food.
